Hooking tourists on fishing
THERE are plenty of fish in the sea - or around Proserpine plenty more fish in the dam, according to the organisers of the Queensland Recreational Fishing Summit.
Last week a group of major tourism bodies and regional councils met to discuss recreational fishing as a green shoot for the tourism industries of the Mackay, Whitsunday and Far North Queensland regions.
The Queensland Recreational Fishing Summit aimed to position North Queensland as Australia's premier recreational fishing destination.
Tourism Whitsundays chief executive Craig Turner was at the summit in Mackay last Friday and said the three stakeholders of the Hinchinbrook, Eungella Dam and Peter Faust Dam areas had reached an "in principle agreement” on a joint marketing arrangement.
"This year we are trying to collectively work together to have those three destinations as part of the AFC (Australian Fishing Championships) and the IFS,” he said.
"All the destinations agreed in principle that we are in favour of pursuing this. Marine Media Group executive chair Michael Harris was at the meeting and we had an open and forthright discussion.”
Mr Turner said it was important to Tourism Whitsundays that Peter Faust Dam was marketed internationally as the premier impoundment fishing destination in Queensland.
"We only had them here for two days in Proserpine last year, it would be good if we could get them to stay a bit longer and fish the dam a bit more,” he said.
The summit drew peak tourism organisations including Mackay, Whitsundays, Townsville Enterprise Limited, Marine Media Group, Hinchinbrook Shire and the Mackay and Cassowary Coast Regional Councils.
Lindsay Dobe from Barra World in Proserpine said he thought linking the three areas was a good idea.
"I think any tourism to push fishing is a good thing. Certainly there is a circuit there for the travelling fisherman,” he said.
