Horse backed from $6.50 into $3 throws jockey off

PUNTING is a seriously cruel game at times and the 'Overs God' was at his most wrathful at Geelong on Thursday.

Those who secured $6.50 for the Blackiston-trained Sailors Falls in race five would have been on good terms with themselves when the gelding was crunched into $3.

The flood of money saw Sailors Falls snatch favouritism from Aurora Rose ($2.35 out to $5) and the Weir-trained Poppiholla ($3.60 out to $5).

However the plunge horse, a winner of his last two starts at Kilmore and Seymour, was in no mood to play the game.

Sailors Falls gave jockey Ben Allen what will surely be the shortest ride of his career, dumping the young hoop as soon as the gates opened.

"It's a first. The horse stumbled a bit and just ripped me straight over his head - threw me like a doll," said a disappointed but unhurt Allen post-race.

"It's a shame because he was probably my best ride for the day."

The ironically-named Sailors Falls continued on his way after dumping Allen, finishing the 2447m journey around two lengths clear of eventual winner Corrs from the Cumani camp.

Stewards declared Sailors Falls a starter, meaning punters did their money cold on the heavily-backed conveyance.
