Housing support will have impact

PEOPLE doing it tough in the Whitsundays have a clear message they won't be forgotten.

The Whitsunday Housing Company was awarded $10,000 in grant funding at The Lady Bowen Trust's 10th year anniversary, announced on November 30.

Chief operating officer Joanne Moynihan said her organisation relied solely on rent received from tenants and that the grant funding would make a real difference.

"The assistance and support we have received from Lady Bowen Trust has an immediate impact on our ability to help those who are at risk of homelessness,” she said.

"People see the Whitsundays as a beautiful paradise destination and don't see the other side of it where people are struggling.”

The funding assists clients with transport fees, removalists, food and rental assistance, furniture, white goods, bedding and blankets.

Ms Moynihan said many factors contributed to homelessness and it was important to have a strategy to tackle this multi-pronged issue.

"Homelessness is not just the result of too few houses. Its causes are many and varied,” she said.

"Domestic violence, a shortage of affordable housing, unemployment, mental illness, family breakdown and drug and alcohol abuse all contribute to the level of homelessness in Australia.”

Lady Bowen Trust chairman of the board of advice, Darryl Seccombe, stressed the importance of providing ongoing support to housing companies.

"Over the past 10 years, the trust's contributions have had a direct impact on the lives of thousands of Queenslanders who have been doing it tough,” Mr Seccombe said.

Whitsunday Housing company was one of 10 organisations to benefit from $96,350 in grants, presented by Governor of Queensland Paul de Jersey.

This year Whitsunday Housing Company settled many new tenants and their families in Bowen, Proserpine, Cannonvale and Jubilee Pocket.

The grant funding will be allocated in 2017.
