How to be energy smart this summer

ALMOST 50 per cent of energy use in summer can be attributed to air conditioning and refrigeration, according to Ergon Energy.

While both appliances are necessary during the hotter months, making some small changes can save you money on your electricity bill and reduce your carbon footprint, the energy provider says.

By setting your air conditioner to an energy-efficient 25 degrees and turning off that second fridge, you can significantly cut your electricity costs during the summer months.

Ergon Energy's tips to reduce your energy consumption this summer include:

  • Install the correct-sized air conditioner for the space you want to cool and consult a qualified air-conditioning contractor to ensure your unit has optimum capacity.
  • Select the air ‘recirculate’ setting. Otherwise you will be drawing in warmer air from the outside and using a lot of electricity to cool your space down.
  • Choose curtains and blinds with lighter colours and pale linings to keep the ambient temperature of the room down and you might not need to turn on your aircon as often.
  • Open up your home to create cross breezes instead of switching on your aircon.
  • Try a fan, combined with the doors and windows open, before switiching on your aircon.
