MACKAY doctor Bill Boyd has been involved with the Australian Medical Association Queensland for 20 years and now he's poised to become its president.

The well-known gynaecologist, who was appointed AMA Queensland president last week, said he felt both honoured by the appointment and excited about the year ahead.

"The president of any organisation implies there is a degree of leadership and, along with the board, we will work on the issues of the day,” he said.

"There will also be a fair bit of media involved and attending board meetings, council meetings and liaising with a number of governments.

"We are not in a position to direct governments but will negotiate with them on all sorts of issues.”

Dr Boyd said he was not the first AMA Queensland president from Mackay but the last one had held the position many years ago.

"Most of the presidents from AMA tend to come from the south-east corner just by the weight of numbers,” he said.

"At the moment there is a president from further north but by me coming from here there will be a flavour of influence from Mackay.”

Dr Boyd said some of the issues he would like to tackle as president included public health and generational disadvantage, medical workforce and training, re-prioritising medical care in response to demand, unifying the health system to get all the parts singing from one song sheet and focussing on disadvantaged people, chronic illness and end of life care.

It's an ambitious list for the new president who will serve one year before the board decides whether or not he will continue in the role for a second year.
