THE smell and aroma of hundreds of flowers and delicious homemade cakes and biscuits were among the many highlights of the 71st annual Proserpine Uniting Church Flower Show and Fete on the weekend.

More than 60 stall holders from throughout the Whitsundays helped bring the flower show to life at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre for the single day event.

Children were buzzing with excitement as they explored the creative workshops and vast range of displays depicting the show's theme of The Wizard of Oz.

Flower show secretary Bernadine Stevens said this year's event had a wonderful atmosphere with many of the plants on sale propagated annually in the Whitsundays.

She said the stunning floral art display showing the tale of The Wizard of Oz with a lion made of coconuts by the Floral Art Group, was one of the highlights of the show this year.

The huge crowds were also delighted with performances by the Proserpine Citizens Band, Cannonvale State School choir and Proserpine State School's junior and senior choir.

Uniting Church Minister, Wayne McHugh said the fete was an integral part of the town's history.

"It is an engaging event which involves everyone in the community and people travel far and wide to get their hands on our quality, locally grown plants," he said.

Also proving popular was the exquisite Compassionate Candles display by the Proserpine Uniting Church.

Volunteer Justin Burrows said every candle sold would help raise funds to develop projects to help communities in extreme poverty.

The church currently sponsors two children in Burkina Faso, West Africa.

Candles and a range of lip balms can be purchased from the Proserpine Uniting Church every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1-5pm.
