Hunger for new flick

FIRST it was Harry Potter, then it was Twilight, but new tween sensation The Hunger Games is set to be the biggest of them all.

The highly-anticipated adaptation of the first book in Suzanne Collins' dystopian trilogy hit the big screen in Rockhampton last Thursday.

Assistant manager of Rockhampton's Birch Carroll and Coyle, Rominesh Ayre, said they had been flat out since, with the movie claiming 50% of all admissions between Thursday and Sunday.

"It's been very busy, but we were expecting it," Rominesh said yesterday.

"It's been much busier than when Breaking Dawn came out."

But the latest cultural phenomenon wasn't just a success in Rockhampton.

The Hunger Games claimed the No.1 spot at the Australian box office over the weekend taking in just over $9 million - Australia's biggest opening day for 2012.

The movie broke box office records in the United States, raking in a huge $155 million on opening weekend, compared to the $69.9 million the very first Twilight film brought in.

On their way in to see the blockbuster film yesterday, Rockhampton's Amy Picot and Andrea Melville said they couldn't wait.

"I'm a bit of a closet Twilight fan, so we'll see how this compares," said Andrea.

"I definitely want to go read the books after."
