‘I will cut your throat’: Teen’s terrifying holdup revealed

A TEENAGER who held a knife to a Cairns taxi driver and told him to "give me all the money or I will cut your throat" has been released from jail after 11 months behind bars.

Isaac Nathanial Lloyd Barlow, 19, and a younger friend were both armed when they laid a trap for the driver about 2.30am on April 23 last year, calling from a payphone and booking the taxi under a false name, the Cairns District Court heard on Thursday.

He pleaded guilty to robbery in company with violence.

The pair, who were drunk, got inside in Jasper Street, Woree, and the immediately suspicious 25-year-old driver asked for prepayment. Barlow's card was twice declined before he attacked.

The court heard he grabbed the driver from behind and threatened him with the knife.

"That is such a violent act," Judge Leanne Clare said.

The driver handed over $50 before Barlow "frisked" him and also demanded the coin drawer, saying "Give me all you have, give me the coin holder or I'll cut your throat."

The other teen, who was 17, then got out of the taxi and ran around to the driver's door before pointing a serrated knife at his face.

The court was told the pair fled with the cash, which totalled about $100, along with the driver's Esky bag. They were arrested at an Earlville residence soon afterwards.

CCTV footage from inside the taxi of the terrifying holdup was played to the court.

"It is clear (the driver) is very anxious about the proximity of the knife," the judge said.

"He would have realised at that moment you could have killed him and had no way of knowing how violent you could become. That's what you wanted him to think."

The judge said Barlow was raised by his grandmother and "should know better".

She sentenced him to three years' jail, suspended immediately as he had been in custody since the holdup occurred.
