Icon’s back for Whitehaven run

RUNNING: Marathon legend Steve Moneghetti returns to the Whitsundays for the latest instalment of the Hamilton Island Endurance Series.

Four-time Olympian, Moneghetti will be participating in the Great Whitehaven Beach Run on Sunday, June 26 and he'll also be sharing his humour, knowledge and stories with locals while he's here.

Moneghetti, who now divides his time between his role as chef de mission for the 2018 Australian Commonwealth Games team and supporting runners and running events around the country; will be arriving to participate in parkrun Hamilton Island on Saturday morning before conducting a free running technique session.

"Runners are creatures of habit, and often think they can't change the way they run. But whether it's about getting faster, stopping injuries or getting more enjoyment from their running; change is possible and I'm aiming to arm runners with the right tools to make those positive changes," Moneghetti said,

On race eve, Beach Run participants and the general public are welcome to attend a 'Meal with Mona' at the Manta Ray Café on Hamilton Island. Commencing at 5pm, Moneghetti will host a free informal Q&A session and attendees.

Race Director Steve Jackson believes this will be one of the highlights of the weekend.

"Steve is a genuine character; he's laconic, enthusiastic and engaging. To be able to sit in a room and be able to chat freely about all things running (and more) is an incredible privilege let alone opportunity," he said.

It also coincides with Hamilton Island's holiday program. Those who visit for the event weekend will be privy to a range of free activities including Moonlight Movies, a 'Yoga for Runners' session, Star Gazing talks, Kids Fun Zones and plenty more.

Held on the pristine Whitehaven Beach, competitors can tackle a range of distances from 5km to a half marathon.

With the event growing each year, organisers are hopeful of attracting over 200 runners.

Entry is inclusive of a Cruise Whitsundays charter from either Port of Airlie or Hamilton Island.

"One of our goals for the Endurance Series is to give people, near and far, a reason to visit and enjoy our beautiful home. We had several locals who have never visited one of the top ten beaches in the world, even though it's right on their doorstep. And what better way to enjoy it than by traversing it's entire length?!" Jackson said.

Registrations are open now with junior events over 500m and 1.5km as well as the free explore Relay Challenge.
