If Swiss gets on roll, watch out: Wilander

TENNIS: Three-time Australian Open winner Mats Wilander has given Stan Wawrinka a huge vote of confidence heading into his semi-final showdown with Novak Djokovic (pictured) in Melbourne tonight.

Sweden's former world No.1, who captured the Australian Open in 1983-84 and again in 1988, the year he also won the French and US Opens, said at his best, Wawrinka was unbeatable.

"When Stan plays his best tennis everyone has to fasten their seatbelt," Wilander said.

"I think Stan in the best player in the world."

Wawrinka and Djokovic have met twice in epic Australia Open battles, Djokovic taking a marathon five-setter 12-10 in the fourth round on the way to winning in 2013, and Wawrinka extracting sweet revenge by outlasting the super Serbian in the semis on the way to taking out the Open last year.

Djokovic has been in brilliant form in this year's tournament, not losing a set and only being broken once in 73 service games.

Wawrinka has dropped just one set, to unseeded Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the third round.

After playing down his chances of defending his title before the first round, the Swiss Davis Cup winner said his confidence had grown throughout the event.

"You know when you play Novak, especially in a semi-final in a grand slam, you have to play your best game," Wawrinka said.

"You have to play your best tennis if you want to push him. So far, I'm playing great."
