Injured Kerevi backs Folau to thrive in centres

RUGBY UNION: Injured centre Samu Kerevi says he is hoping to stay positive after missing out on the Wallabies' Spring Tour through ankle surgery.

Kerevi had an operation on Monday night after getting hurt in the 37-10 Bledisloe Cup loss to New Zealand on Saturday.

It means he will not play again this year and misses out on his first tour of Europe, but he insisted he would return a better player after earning eight caps for his country this season.

"I really wanted to keep putting my mark on that spot I had in the Wallabies but this is footy, things like this happen,” he said.

"I've just got to stay positive. I've been pretty happy with the season but there's still a lot of things I need to work on.”

Kerevi should be fully fit by January and join his new-look Queensland Reds team for pre-season training.

In the meantime, he backed Israel Folau to make the potential shift to his position on the coming tour but said he wanted the jersey back after he overcomes his injury.

"I think he'll go very well (in the centres),” Kerevi told reporters.

"I'm backing the boys in whatever position they're put. But when I'm better, I'll come back and chase him for it.”
