Inquiry into loss of water is on-going
THE Whitsunday Regional Council is considering legal action after it confirmed this week that investigations were continuing into loss of water in Proserpine.
Council was quoted in a Whitsunday Coast Guardian report two weeks ago saying it was aware of allegations of water theft.
A council spokesperson confirmed this week that inquiries into the alleged water theft were continuing.
"Council is currently investigating this matter. Depending on the outcome of its investigation, council may consider a number of actions, including potential legal action,” the spokesperson said.
"In order to maintain the integrity of its investigation, council will not be commenting further on this matter.”
The council said accuracy of water meters was constantly on their radar as part of its preventative maintenance program.
As water meters age, they can become less accurate and as such council is diligent in their regular audit of water meters.
The council has a water meter replacement program underway at the moment, whereby they are replacing over 60 large meters that are due to be upgraded.
The new meter technology available that council has now introduced, allows any abnormal flows to be recorded accurately which will reduce council's unaccounted for water
loss.
More than 200 small to medium water meters are also scheduled to be replaced this financial year as part of council's maintenance program for replacing aging water meters.
"Council is currently working with large water users in the region to assess their water connections and assist them in correctly setting up fit for purpose infrastructure to suit their requirements,” the spokesperson said.
