Ipswich "bomb hoax" culprit still at large

POLICE are no closer to knowing who is responsible for last week's bomb scare that shut down a West Ipswich shopping centre for three hours.

CCTV from the centre was seized by police following the removal of a "suspicious device", a can with a visible wick and switch wrapped in duct tape, found in the alley between IGA and Spotlight on Brisbane St.

But police have finished reviewing the footage and found nothing showing the person/s placing the item on the footpath.

>>Staff "weren't worried" about bomb threat

They're appealing to anyone in the area with information that will help in the investigation.

The can was removed from the centre just after 10.30am on Wednesday, June 22 after being inspected by a robot from the bomb squad.

Despite having the appearance of a home-made bomb, analysis showed the can contained no explosives.

However that didn't deter police from vowing to find the person/s responsible with Inspector Keith McDonald saying it had tied up valuable police resources and cost the centre's businesses three hours of trade.

"If it is a prank, it's a stupid and very silly prank," Inspector McDonald said last week.

The device was discovered by a cleaner about 7.30am.

Police believe it was placed on the footpath between 5.30 and 7.30am.
