Ironman heading to the west


TRIATHLON enthusiasts from the Whitsundays are merging for the SunSmart Ironman Western Australia in Busselton on December 5.

Whitsunday Triathlon Club members including a contingent from Hamilton Island will unite and travel to the west for this incredible challenge.

The members competing in Busselton include Steve Athey, James Carman, Tricia Athey, Janelle Eastwood and Shona Russell.

They will be joined by Hamilton Island athletes Steve Jackson, Karon Handy, John Hunter, Michaella Trigg and Erika Kelly.

According to Athey three of the athletes James Carman, John Hunter and Erika Kelly are novices to the full iron man distance.

SunSmart Ironman Western Australia includes a 3.8km swim 180km bike 42.2km run.

The event is part of the global family of Ironman distance races.

In an attempt for athletes to qualify for the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Hawaii, the race attracts more than 30,000 athletes to Busselton.
