Island competition to ‘name the joey’

THE first photos of Wild Life Hamilton Island's latest arrival, a female baby joey, have been released.

Healthy, growing and happily enjoying the Whitsundays since her birth in May, there is one thing this new arrival needs - a name.

Hamilton Island's 'Name the Joey' Competition is calling on all Australians to put forward their most creative name suggestion.

The winner, to be announced Wednesday, December 17, will win two return domestic flights to Hamilton Island, two nights' accommodation at the Reef View Hotel and a VIP experience at Wild Life Hamilton Island including an encounter in the kangaroo walk-through with the new joey and her mum.

When mum Glenda first arrived at the park, keepers had the happy surprise of discovering that she was in the early stages of her pregnancy.

Since she was born in May, the joey has been described as revelling in the attention from locals and holiday makers alike.

Now six months old, she is finding her feet as she enjoys racing up and down and exploring her surroundings before returning back to mum's pouch.

The new joey has also been described by Wild Life Hamilton Island keepers as curious, with the potential to be very cheeky, already getting herself into lots of mischief at the park.

Wild Life Hamilton Island's 'Name the Joey' Competition is now open and closes on Friday, December 12.
