OPINION: Whatever happened to ‘do the crime, do the time’?

I FIND it absolutely appalling that a man can spit in the face of a police officer and then head butt another and walk away free.

That is exactly what happened last week when Troy Anthony Kirby went through Maryborough District Court.

Fair enough, he had already served 30 days in prison for the two attacks, but does that pass the pub test?

Not for me.

Not when a policeman was left with a permanent scar to his face and the other will undergo months of testing after having blood and mucus spat on his face.

It's an attack I can only describe as "vile".

Do you think it is time local courts toughen up? Have your say and join the conversation below.

It is about time our courts start to fall into line with community expectations.

The thing is, this isn't an isolated case.

We have seen sex offenders and people responsible for horrific crimes released into the community with suspended sentences.

Surely it is time the system toughens up on criminals, especially repeat offenders.

If someone is willing to do that to two police officers, what are they going to do to a normal person without a badge or a gun on the street?

Whatever happened to 'do the crime, do the time'?
