It's not all about sex

A SUNSHINE Coast-based commercial pilot who once starred in a porn movie series is running for a Queensland senate position for the Australian Sex Party.

Tim Sheen, aka Mel Bourne from the ’80s erotic series The Down Under Project, launched his campaign in Brisbane yesterday with the party’s other Queensland senate candidate, feminist adult shop owner Desiree Gibson, of Ipswich.

Mr Sheen, 45, who lives at Pelican Waters and has a hobby farm at Eudlo, said he stood for common sense and the spirit of community.

“I’d like to see more of a common sense attitude towards the way we approach a lot of things,” he said.

“People seem to know all their rights. (But) people seem to be losing sight of their obligations to each other and to their community.”

Mr Sheen said he decided to run for election at the behest of party convenor Fiona Patten and publicity officer Robbie Swan, who are his friends.

The Sex Party’s policies include establishing an R & X rating classification system for computer games, and law reforms for same sex marriage and abortion.

Mr Sheen said the party’s name was eye-catching but did not mean it was about the act of sex any more than the Labor Party was about hard work or the Liberal Party was about not wearing bras.

“I understand where people are coming from. Are we ready for the Sex Party? But Queensland is perceived as the nanny state and I think young people would like to see that changed,” he said.

Mr Sheen said he had been concerned when he was younger at the impact that his erotic movie role could have on his career.
