Petelo makes Queensland debut
RUGBY LEAGUE: Whitsunday Brahman Ivan Petelo has made his Queensland debut as the XXXX Rangers downed the New South Wales Ron Massey Cup representatives 11-4 on Sunday night.
Played at Gold Coast's Pizzey Park, the Maroons were able to build a 4-0 lead at half-time into a victory.
How did Petelo describe running out in the famous maroon jumper?
"It was a good feeling and a good experience for me," he said.
Petelo ran out as starting lock and said it was not the same as playing in the Mackay competition.
"It was a whole different level of play - fast, more physical, not an easy game. It was tough a game," he said.
"Our game plan was the forwards stick to basics, catch the ball early, and don't put pressure on other players.
"You do the hard yards first."
Petelo spent a week in a training camp on the Gold Coast in preparation for the game.
"It was a good experience. There was some good team bonding," he said.
His achievements are not a surprise to people who've followed his career, particularly Brahmans A-grade coach James Webb.
"He's been probably our best player for the last three years," Webb said.
"He's always in the top 10 players of the year in the Mackay comp.
"He's a rare package - a big guy and they generally just smash and bash but he's got the skills of a half, all the power of a forward and the speed of an outside back."
Webb said it was a big achievement for the club.
"It just shows where our club's at, it's unheard for a club like Prossie to supply players to a Queensland team," he said.
Petelo said his focus was now on playing for the Brahmans and defending their premiership.
