Murdoch steps down at BSkyB

JAMES Murdoch has stepped down as chairman of the pay TV company BSkyB, News Corporation confirmed last night.

Mr Murdoch, News Corporation's deputy chief operating officer, has been under pressure in the media and from shareholders as result of Britain's tabloid phone-hacking scandal.

In a letter to the board setting out his reasons, Mr Murdoch said: ''As attention continues to be paid to past events at News International, I am determined that the interests of BSkyB should not be undermined by matters outside the scope of this company.''

A statement from his father, Rupert Murdoch, the chairman and chief executive of News Corporation, and Chase Carey, the president and chief operating officer, said the company was ''grateful for James Murdoch's successful leadership of BSkyB''.

News Corporation owns 39 per cent of BSkyB.
