Javelin thrower is aiming high

A PROSERPINE State School student's dream of representing Australia in athletics is a step closer after a financial push from a local business.

Shakane Costello, 13, will compete against his age group in javelin at the Queensland State Secondary Championships later this month.

Shakane, who was age champion at the school's athletics carnival, has only been throwing the javelin for a year, but was picked in the district squad to contest the North Queensland Secondary Championships in Townsville.

A strong performance there, where he threw 35m, was awarded selection in the NQ team, which will take on the state's best athletes from October 22.

"I've been pretty happy with what I've accomplished so far, with going to Brisbane, and it'd be pretty good to represent Australia. That would be pretty awesome ... a kid that has come from a small aboriginal community to represent Australia or Queensland," he said.

To help meet the costs of travelling to Brisbane, Jubilee Pocket IGA came to the party.

"It's the local community that support us, and we feel that we should be giving back," owner Shane Kinneally said.
