Joel Woods returns for overdue concert

RETURNING to the place where his music career first began, Joel Woods is heading home to Proserpine as a part of his debut solo tour of Queensland.

Joel began his musical tuition almost 15 years ago as a student at St Catherine's Catholic College in Proserpine.

"But I haven't played a concert in Proserpine since I was in high school there - so about eight years ago now," he said.

Fast forward to today and the former St Catherine's school captain has earned his masters in music studies and has played as a soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Mandolin Orchestra, Melbourne Mandolin Orchestra and The Australia Germany Tour.

"It's the first opportunity for me to showcase to my friends and family what I've learned in my studies at university and my masters," he said of the coming concert on home turf

It's also an opportunity for Joel to reconnect with his original music teacher, Mia Bogie.

He will be playing a special mandolin, donated to him by an art teacher and avid fan.

"It will be the mandolin's very first performance," he said.

"It's a 150-year-old Italian mandolin, so it's very special."
