Judge opens path for ANZ case

FEDERAL Court judge Justice Michelle Gordon has ruled that some fees charged by ANZ Banking Group are excessive and need to be paid back to customers.

The decision will allow 34,000 ANZ customers to pursue a class action against the bank.

Justice Gordon found that some of the fees, including late payment fees, could be considered excessive and therefore illegal.

However, in a win for the bank, other fees, including overdrawn charges and dishonour fees, were found to be reasonable.

It is expected the class action will be heard next year in the Federal Court.
