SINCE the last federal election there have been changes to the Senate voting system that voters need to be familiar with when Australia goes to the polls this Saturday.

This weekend voters will be required to number six boxes above the line for the parties of your choice or number at least 12 boxes below the line for individual candidates.

When voting above the line you will be expected to place a number in at least six boxes.

Place a '1' in the box for your first choice, the number '2' in the box above the party or group that is your second choice and so on until you have numbered at least six boxes.

If you choose to vote below the line - you can't vote below and above the line - place a '1' in the box beside the candidate that is your first choice, and the numbers '2', '3', '4' and so on until there are at least 12 boxes numbered.

The choice of either below or above the line voting applies only to the white Senate ballot paper.

Voters on Saturday will also receive a ballot paper for the House of Representatives.

This ballot will contain the names and the logos of the candidates and the parties they represent that are running for the seat of Dawson.

For your vote to count every box must be numbered from '1' to '7' as there are seven candidates contesting the seat of Dawson.

On Saturday the polling booths will be open from 8am to 6pm.
