June’s cruising for volunteers

FRIDAY marked the start of a busy June for the Cruise Ship Volunteer Ambassadors, who welcomed their first ship of the month to the Abell Point Marina.

As always, feedback was generous, with volunteer ambassador coordinator Brian Richardson saying the new water park Airlie Ride n Slide and Whitsunday Gold Coffee tours were the hot topic among visitors.

"The feedback is normally that it is a great day out even when they are just wandering around town. The markets were very, very busy. The weather was really on our side (and) a few even came back sunburnt," he said.

The Pacific Dawn was on a four-day cruise from Brisbane with one stop in Airlie Beach.

The ship brought to town 1598 people, 420 of whom went on local tours.

It was the first of six cruise ships to visit the region this month.

Mr Richardson guesstimates throughout the month, Airlie Beach will play host to around 10-11,000 visitors after five ships visiting in March brought 8-9000 to town.

Of the 10-11,000 possible visitors, Mr Richardson said an average 2-3000 were predicted to go on tours with local tourism operators.

"With the tours in consideration, it has potential to earn around $700,000 over this month," he said.

Next Monday, the Legend of the Sea will visit, pulling up through the Port of Airlie and bringing around 2076 passengers and 859 crew.

The captain and hotel director will be coming ashore to be presented with a plaque and keys as a "welcome to town" ceremony.

The Royal Caribbean ship which visits Brisbane, Airlie Beach, Cairns, Darwin, Bali and Singapore will return in December.

The Cruise Ship Ambassador Volunteers are always on the look out for new volunteers, with interest growing rapidly.

In the past two months, the ambassadors have placed seven new volunteers.
