June’s 60-year-old missing locket and old friend turn up

A SUNSHINE Coast woman's missing gold locket has been found, but that is not all the hunt has turned up.

June Gillespie's gold locket was found at the Mary Cairncross Park carpark at Maleny this week, two weeks after she lost it on a belated 78th birthday trip to the area.

Her daughter, Lyn Cox, said her parents, who were travelling at the moment, were elated at news of the find.

"Mum sounded teary on the phone and I don't think Dad was far behind her," Ms Cox said.

The locket, given to Ms Cox's mother as a 14th birthday present, contained a photo of 14-year-old June and her husband Ian as an 18-year-old.

Ms Cox said Mary Cairncross Reserve education officer Greg Ivey found the locket and then Sunshine Coast Council staff worked out who owned it after reading a Daily story about the loss.

She said it was a mystery why it had not turned up earlier.

Ms Cox said several people had phoned to try to help recover the locket after the original Daily story.

One caller posted the story to an old friend who knew Mrs Gillespie when she was 14.

"Mum said maybe she had to lose a locket to find a friend," Ms Cox said.
