Junior cricketers go head to head

CRICKET: Proserpine Junior Cricket Club hosted teams from Home Hill and Mackay representative teams for a mini Whitsunday region Twenty20 cricket carnival on Sunday.

The carnival also doubled as a fundraising event for Pink Stumps Day for the Proserpine club.

Club president Shane Knight said "the games were fiercely competed and fairly played with some great junior cricket on display”.

Each club played two games with nine games played throughout the day.

Some of the highlights of the day were Proserpine local Noel Waipape steering his side home to victory against the Home Hill side, and the Under-13s and Under-11s Proserpine sides being very competitive against their northern and southern neighbours, Knight said.

The Proserpine Under-16 Pitbulls started the day with a good win over the Mackay side by 21 runs.

The Proserpine boys made 143 runs from their 20 overs with Noel Waipape (45 not out) and Jayden Lane (31) leading the way.

In reply the Mackay team fell short with 122 with Mitch Doolan (46 not out) top scoring.

The second game for the Proserpine under 16 Pitbulls had Home Hill post 141 runs.

In the chase, Proserpine passed their target in the last over, thanks to some massive hitting from Noel Waipape.

He peppered the out-grounds with seven huge sixes on his way to an unbeaten 76 runs.

Waipape was well supported by Regan Knight (29) and Mat Shoebridge (23).

In the Under-13s, Mackay posted 99 runs from their 20 overs with Proserpine falling short on 43 runs with Max Watson high scoring with nine runs.

The second match played by Proserpine against Home Hill was closer.

Home Hill made 78 runs and were too good for the Proserpine team who fell short on 57 runs with Oscar Doolan top scoring with 15 runs.

The Proserpine Under-11 Pitbulls played two very close games against the visiting clubs.

In the under 11's first outing, Mackay Brothers accumulated 102 runs and were able to keep out Proserpine on 90 runs.

In the second game, Proserpine made 64 runs but the visiting Home Hill team finished their innings with 69 in their last over.

The Proserpine Junior Cricket Club committee would like to thank all the parents who volunteered their time to make the day a fantastic local event.

The event raised more than $500 for the McGrath Foundation through the Pink Stumps Day.
