Juniors excel at state titles
OVER the Easter break local sailors Brendan Hoffman and Lachie McConnel, both members of the Whitsunday Sailing Club, travelled south to compete in the 29er state titles, held at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in conjunction with Sail Brisbane.
Due to the light winds, sailing was postponed on two of the days but the breeze filled in the afternoons and created near perfect conditions for the pair.
The team finished 12th overall - an outstanding effort considering the top six 29er sailors in Australia were there using this event as a warm up for the upcoming season.
The team who go by the name of Team KAOS left the regatta as the highest ranked 29er team in North Queensland.
The boys said they would like to thank their parents, their coach James Dahl, who also travelled to Brisbane to support them and the Whitsunday Sailing Club, who all helped them get to the event.
Another Whitsunday sailor who attended Sail Brisbane was Eva Lorenz, who together with her crew, Emma Barsi of Townsville, sailed Drag Queen, Eva's International 420.
Eva has been struggling to find crew this year and Emma stepped up to the plate at the last moment, with time for just three days training before the event.
The team did well enough to come fourth, behind national champions Dana Tavener and Cathy Paget (NSW), James Hodgson and Cameron Gise (Qld), and Kanya and Sandya Raj (NSW).
Former local sailor Klaus Lorenz was also at the titles, sailing his first regatta in the 49er class, with Brisbane's Jonathon Anderson.
The pair came third out of the three boats competing. Following the event, Klaus came home to the Whitsundays and ran a one-day course for the local Optimists.
