Kicking the ultimate goal

Soccer: It would be an honour for just one Whitsunday soccer player to be selected for the upcoming West Ham clinic on the Gold Coast in mid-September.

But with twelve soccer kids from Airlie Beach, Proserpine and Bowen having caught the eye of discerning West Ham Academy coaches at a preliminary clinic a few weeks ago - it is clear that the talent pool among Whitsunday juniors runs deep.

Whitsunday Football Club committee member Allan Milostic said the coaches liked what they saw.

"They don't just pick twelve from this area because they want to fill numbers, they only pick them on ability," he said.

"They would have been looking for skills and attitude and they were very much looking at kids who could think.

"If they weren't happy with the kids none of them would be going so twelve is pretty good."

West Ham selectors searched for talent across the 7-17 age group.

Murphy Callaghan, Reef Hansen-Johnson, Ky Porter, Finlay Farrell, Freddie Radford, Matthew Belyea, Reece Matthews, Tyler Naumann, Jazz Knezevic, Dylan Beale, Zak Dalgarno and Cooper Edwards were among those selected.

Milostic said the opportunity would expose them to a level of training they wouldn't have in a regional area.

"There is much more intensive coaching and more advanced coaching techniques as well," he said.

"They will stay overnight and pretty much live and breathe (the experience)."

WFC Under 12 player Dylan Beale said he was excited about the opportunity and even wanted to explore future possibilities to train in London.

"I've been playing soccer since I was two and I like it because you get to meet new people and get new skills in life," he said.

"I think I will learn a lot more (about) ball control and shooting."

The players will travel to Southport School on the Gold Coast for the clinic from September 16-19.
