Kids bag unofficial hug record
A HUG is so much more than two people coming together and wrapping their arms around one another.
A hug is a symbol.
Symbolic of support, understanding, compassion, affection and love.
The kids of the Proserpine State School took this international symbol of peace and tolerance to a new level last week when students turned out in force to break a Guinness World Record.
Grade two teacher Tara Buchbach said she first got the idea of having a crack at breaking the record after hearing about it on the radio.
She then rang the radio station and nominated Proserpine State School for the record attempt.
The Guinness World Record for the most hugs in one minute is 79 hugs.
"We had a couple of counters and they counted 89 and 91 but a couple of hugs will be missed and we will have to watch the video back and figure out how many actual hugs we got, but fingers crossed we beat 79,” Ms Buchbach said.
The video of the record attempt will be sent off to the Guinness Book of Records for authentication.
Ms Buchbach said one of the main focuses of the school this year was getting the community of Proserpine involved in the school.
"As soon as everyone heard about it they were all for it. It's such a good thing to be doing and the whole community got involved,” she said.
Student Shaneil Hood-O'Hanlon said it was a "fun” experience.
"We got to get hugged and we were actually in a world record, it's unbelievable,” she said.
Radio presenter John "Johnno” Sutherland said it was tough work organising the kids and a lot of preparation had gone into the record attempt.
"It took a while for us to register with Guinness to make the attempt official,” he said.
"Tara (then) got the kids together and they did a bunch of training sessions and we sent in videos of them training.
"The kids really got into it and we had a lot of fun doing it.
"It was also a chance to share a positive message. If kids are practising hugging I am sure their parents are not going to be complaining.''
