Kids 'tri' and they succeed

PLENTY of sweat and the look of exhaustion couldn't mask the pride on the faces of kids crossing the finish line at the Airlie Beach Triathlon junior division this afternoon.

About 160 kids competed in the Ergon Energy Kidzpower Triathlon which saw individuals and teams conquering a swim, bike and running race.

Race director Stephen Jackson said he was thrilled with the turn out as parents and supporters watched and cheered on the young competitors.

"It was really good to see so many spectators and parents being supportive of their kids,” he said.

"We had lots of volunteers and we really appreciate the support from the schools and the kids just getting into it and that's all we really want to see.”

Mr Jackson said not only was the triathlon a lot of fun, it was also a great way to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.

"It's about getting that healthy lifestyle as part of their routine at a young age and hopefully they take it right through to adulthood,” he said.

The youngsters competed in three different age groups- under 8s, 8-10s and 11 years plus.

Each child who competed in the race was greeted with their very own medal as they crossed the finish line.

Mr Jackson said the junior races weren't about winning but about having fun.

"There were definitely some athletes out there and we had a lot of kids from Mackay and Townsville and kids from local schools,” he said.

"There were definitely lots of smiles on faces which is what we want to see.”

The Colorbond Airlie Beach Triathlon Sprint and Enticer distance events commence tomorrow at 7am in Airlie Beach.
