Is killer jackaroo turned suspected jihadi in Syria?

THE family of a jackaroo turned suspected "Islamic State jihadi" say they have not heard from him in more than a year and that he is maybe holed up in Syria.

Guy Staines, a 43-year-old Narrabri-raised man who spent 18 years in jail for shooting 25-year-old Andrew Abbott near Moree, is believed to have converted to  radical Islam while in Goulburn's Supermax prison.

The Australian newspaper this morning reported "Brothers 4 Life crime boss and killer" Bassam Hamzy  converted  Staines to Islam.

Staines' wife is Rose Karroum - the sister of Amira Karroum who in 2014, along with her jihadi husband Tyler Caser, died in Syria after they were supposedly sent to the war zone by Sydney terror recruiter Hamdi Alqudsi.

Last week, 39-year-old Alqudsi was convicted of recruiting seven people to fight in Syria.

It is believed Staines left Sydney for Syria or Iraq in 2015 and his family said they had not heard from him since.

The Australian reported Staines' mother Elizabeth Busby as saying she was in the dark about where her son was or what he was up to.

"I wouldn't have a clue what's going on," Ms Busby said.

"I haven't spoken to my son for quite some time. No one has.

"And I don't think his wife has either because we aren't too (sure) what was going on because we hadn't heard from him.

"She couldn't talk to us either." - ARM NEWSDESK
