Koala sighted at Proserpine Dam

A KOALA in the trees was the last thing Gregory River residents Natalie, Stuart, Josh, Michael and Ryan Lock expected to see on a wake-boarding trip to the Peter Faust Dam.

The Lock family were introducing friends from Ireland to the delights of the dam on Sunday morning when the koala was seen.

Natalie Lock said it was actually "a lady from out of town" who spotted the furry creature in the trees.

"And then I saw all these international students [who were there with Lions] looking up at a tree and I thought "what are they looking at?" I couldn't see from a distance but it was a big healthy koala bear just sitting in the tree," she said.

Mrs Lock said as far as she knew, this was an unusual sight.

"We've lived here for 30 years and I've never seen a koala bear in the bush."

Fauna Rescue Whitsunday (FRW) member Barb Adamson said she had not heard of koalas at the dam.

"We've got a little pocket of koalas at Bloomsbury but I've never heard of them at the dam although that doesn't mean it's not possible," Ms Adamson said.

Mrs Lock said this was a fantastic new attraction and she hoped visitors would show the koalas some respect.

"We want them to stay there," she said.
