Labor votes for offshore processing

THE Immigration Minister Chris Bowen has won support at the ALP national conference to embrace offshore processing.

Mr Bowen moved amendments to the party platform to aspire to increase the refugee intake to 20,000 while processing asylum seekers in another country such as Malaysia.

"We have to tackle this with a soft heart and a hard head," he said.

Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor backed Mr Bowen's amendment to the party platform.

"Do we simply not combat people smuggling and watch asylum seekers risking their lives at sea or are we committed to a safer process where people are settled and settled under law," he said.
