Labor's old guard wins in reshuffle

LABOR'S minority Old Guard faction pulled off the biggest win in the Palaszczuk Government Cabinet reshuffle, adding an extra minister, despite having the smallest caucus numbers in the party.

Grace Grace's inclusion as Employment, Industrial Relations and Multicultural Affairs minister, ahead of factional colleague Di Farmer, brings the Old Guard, also known as Labor Unity, ministerial numbers to four despite only having seven members in the 43-strong caucus.

Ms Grace joins Kate Jones, Bill Byrne and Curtis Pitt as Old Guard members, almost equalling the Cabinet numbers of Labor Forum, the party's right faction, which counts Yvette D'Ath, Anthony Lynham, Cameron Dick, Annastacia Palaszczuk and now Stirling Hinchliffe as members.

The dominant Left faction added two ministers, with Leanne Donaldson and Mick de Brenni joining Jackie Trad, Steven Miles, Corallee O'Rourke, Mark Bailey, Shannon Fentiman and Leeanne Enoch.

The Left's dominance in Cabinet equals it's dominance in caucus, holding 20 of the 43 positions.  But the extra position for the Old Guard had some noses out of joint on Monday afternoon, particularly since Ms Grace had been awarded the industrial relations and employment portfolio, despite her strong union links.
