Ladies and gentleman, welcome to the show

FOR some people, Show Whitsunday is about the rides, the show bags and the dagwood dogs, but for people like Donna Rogers, it's a year-long commitment that's stretched more than two decades.

Ms Rogers has been involved with the show in one way or another for 25 years and is now in her fourth year as president.

Today she officially opened its 104th event as part of a job that couldn't be done without absolute dedication.

"I've always been involved in community things from a young age. I thoroughly enjoy it," she said.

"I've done an apprenticeship in each one of the sections here - I've done industrial, the bars, the rosters.

"I think we do need to give back and the show was a way of me doing that."

The first female president of the show, Ms Rogers said it was the people and support from the community that kept her coming back.

"My favourite thing is working with a committee to achieve this," she said.

"To see a good show, to know we put this on - satisfaction is the end result."

Ms Rogers said it was seeing people from across the community coming together that she also loved.

"There will be people here who haven't seen each other for months - that was the origin of these shows," she said.

"People didn't have the transport we have now - coming to the show once a year, to some degree, some people still come for that purpose."

At the official show opening today, judges Rod Crompton and Warren Cummins spoke of the importance of regional shows.

"These shows in Queensland are unique," Mr Crompton said.

"I've been involved with them since I was 15. They're something I've loved my entire life."

The 104th Show Whitsunday is on today and tomorrow, but in many ways it's an ongoing event.

"The planning starts for next year on Sunday when this stops," Ms Rogers said.
