Late command puts NZ over Cairns
AMERICAN point guard Cedric Jackson made the fourth quarter his own to help the New Zealand Breakers to an 85-65 victory over the Cairns Taipans at the North Shore Events Centre on Friday.
The rematch of last year's grand finalists hung in the balance at 56-46 in the final quarter until Jackson put the league leaders on his back, scoring 12 points in a row to carry them clear.
Jackson finished with 18 points, seven assists and six rebounds, while import Andrew Warren had 18 points (4/9 three-pointers) for Cairns.
A white hot Daryl Corletto led all scorers with a career-high 26 points, including three triples in a 17-6 second-quarter run that initially put New Zealand clear.
"We did a bit of scouting and knew they would worry about our big guys," said Corletto. "(Coach Andrej Lemanis) was on me to stay patient, wait out there in the corner and if I'm open, shoot it.
