Late surge was not enough for victory

SOCCER: Early mistakes cost the Whitsunday Football Club side dearly against the Wanderers in Mackay on Saturday.

Despite a late surge to the Whitsundays in the last 20 minutes of the game the Wanderers won 3-2.

WFC manager Anthony Nobilla said the side wasn't able to hit the ground running in the early stage of the game.

"We allowed them to score goals and they were 3-0 up before we started playing our game,” he said.

"The coach made a few changes which may have brought balance into the line up and the structure of the game and we started to dominate a bit better and scored more goals but time ran out.”

Nobilla said there were plenty of positive points to take out of the game.

"The fitness of the boys is starting to show in the last 20 minutes of the game, where other teams die out we go from strength to strength and it's a credit to our coaching staff who do a lot of work in the fitness area,” he said.

Nobilla said the side needed to take some important lessons out of the game.

"We need to start working on a little cohesion and a sense of being in the game together,” he said.

"There are a few people trying to do too much individually and that is unbalancing the game play, we can't keep to a strategy because not everyone is on the same page.”
