Leaders discuss 'economic future'

MORE than 100 business and union leaders will discuss Australia's economic future with the Prime Minister Julia Gillard in Brisbane from Tuesday.

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman is a notable absence from the list of participants at the Prime Minister's Economic Forum.

The Prime Minister's office confirmed he was invited, along with all other premiers.

But a spokesman for Mr Newman said he was unable to attend due to Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

"When we did RSVP for two assistant ministers to attend, the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet advised RSVPs had closed," he said.

The forum will focus on Australia's current role in the global economy as well as tackling the crucial question of how the high dollar is affecting the nation's economy.

Participants will include government advisers, union heads and some business leaders, although few representatives of Queensland's driving mining and coal seam gas industries will be present.

The carbon price, deregulation, infrastructure and business innovation are on the agenda for the Wednesday forum after an official dinner on Tuesday.
