Leanne is lifting for Whitsunday
A WHITSUNDAY weightlifter is eyeing off a world title, but she needs help getting there.
Whitsunday Weightlifting Club coach Leanne Knox is ranked number one in the country in the 63kg division and number two of all weight classes as a master competitor.
Following a successful nationals carnival in Melbourne last year, Leanne has now been asked to attend the Masters Weightlifting IWF World Championships in Finland.
"I think it's a real privilege. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to compete for Australia," she said.
"I'd really love to go, especially knowing it's possible to finish top three in the world, but at the same time, it's the other side of the world. We wouldn't be able to do it as a club so we'd need support from the community."
Leanne is seeking sponsors so she can "put Whitsundays on the map" at the international level and represent her country.
"It is a dream I never thought I had. It would be a privilege to wear the Australian colours and compete for Australia," she said.
"It would be really exciting to prove to people...that life doesn't stop when you get older, you can still achieve sporting goals when you get to the masters [35 and older] side of things."
Leanne's attendance in Finland would also be a tick for aspiring athletes in remote areas.
"I started out teaching myself in a shed in Airlie Beach and I can still make it to that level," she said. "I'd love to be able to represent a small regional place like Airlie. This would be a real achievement and it's exciting to compete against Russians and Germans who are traditionally good weightlifting nations."
Leanne and her coach Miles Wydall are also gunning for next year's Pan Pacific Games.
