Lessons to help plug into a digital world
WITH skills involving online technology becoming a near mandatory requirement in the 21st century, the Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre and Endeavour Foundation have come together to offer their clients computer lessons.
The free lessons will run on Tuesdays and Fridays and will aim to give people the basic skills required to be confident in an online world.
Nikki Twohill is one of the volunteer computer tutors and said the lessons were about helping people understand and get access to the digital world as well as building confidence.
"We realised there's a wider community out there that need to access computers within the community,” she said.
"We've identified that services like Medicare and Centrelink are going digitally online and that people are going to need to become familiar with the internet and computers, and accessing their services if they aren't already.”
Ms Twohill said the lessons would not be structured and would invite people to ask questions.
"People can come here with a list of their questions and we can work through them and teach them how to use a computer, phone or tablet,” she said.
"It's very client orientated. We have a lot of fun and our clients teach us a lot as well as we're teaching them.”
The centre already offered internet classes for seniors, but Ms Twohill said their new lessons would be offered to the wider community.
"The service is there to help fill in that need within the community,” she said.
The lessons will begin on February 14. Contact Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre on 49467850 for more information.
