WHITSUNDAY Regional Council may be forced to review the design of its entrance statement to the Airlie Beach main street after letters from the welcome sign have already disappeared.

Whitsunday mayor Jennifer Whitney said she was aware of vandalism on the entertainment strip and conceded that the letters, which are fixed into a wall about 3cm from the face, might need to be re-thought as it seems they have been stolen.

However, Cr Whitney said the street was currently under the control of Probuild Civil.

"And every time we change something, whether it be small or large items in that project, it costs us dollars," she said.

Cr Whitney said the street would need to be finished as per the let contract "and then we'll look at it".

"I do think that Council can come in with the staff we've got after the job's finished and do that with very minimal costs," she said.

"It's just a shame that people don't respect community assets."

Whitsunday Police Sergeant Barry Haran said it was not known exactly when the letters went missing but he believed it may have been just a week after they were put there.

"It's wilful damage and police are disappointed that this type of behaviour occurs in Airlie Beach," he said.
