Light air causes slow start to Challengers Cup

LIGHT air in the convergence zone of two breezes caused the dinghies to miss the start line at the second race of the Whitsunday Sailing Club Challengers' Cup on Sunday.

Four boats competed in division 2, while three boats raced around the buoys in division 3.

The wind was still light on the start line, not even enough to fly the flags on the start boat, however it soon filled in lightly so the first boats across the line had a favourable lift on port tack.

The forecasted breeze soon entered the bay and slowly filled across the course, turning the windward work into a shy reach as the Olympic triangle course became more of a drag race than a windward/leeward course.

On corrected time, Wobbly Boat, skippered by Craig Piccinelli, claimed first place in division 2, followed by Reignition (Charles Wallis), Crossbow (David Lund) and Treasure VIII (Harold Menelaus).

Division 3 was won by High Tide, skippered by Shannon Hart, followed by Lorna Rose Too (Pete Mitchelson) and third went to Anthea (Dewi Hughes).

The race was enjoyed by all once the breeze filled in, and presentations were held at the Whitsunday Sailing Club later on Sunday afternoon.
