ON A visit to Walkerston, State Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg was still spruiking Queensland LNP's last election plan for asset lease sales, and said it would have funded the Walkerston Bypass by now.

"We had a plan to be able to fund the likes of the Walkerston Bypass, this government came to power saying it didn't need to sell our lease assets in order to identify the funding," he said.

"There is a real, significant desire in this community to move those heavy vehicles around the community... That is a safer outcome."

Mr Springborg said he was in the Mackay region to discuss the Walkerston bypass and other issues with residents.

He was critical of Leanne Donaldson's appointment to Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries in the recent cabinet reshuffle, and said she was inexperienced for the job.

"(The premier) has demoted this important portfolio of agriculture to the bottom rung in the 17-person cabinet," he said.

"At least before they had someone who was a little bit further up... not that Bill Byrne was actually setting the world on fire, far from it."

Mr Springborg said while he was in the region he'd also discuss the new sugar marketing bill with cane farmers.

"It rebalances things in their favour a bit, to make sure they have the protections of negotiation," he said.

Mr Springborg is in the Mackay region today.
