Local community cleans up shores

THE Whitsunday community is amazing - at least that's what Eco Barge Clean Seas founder Libby Edge believes.

And why?

Because more than 5000 kilograms of rubbish was removed from the Whitsunday shores by the community in October.

Done under the banner of Operation Clean Seas, Ms Edge said this combined community effort was a huge success, with over five tonnes of rubbish no longer able to harm the precious marine life and environment of the Whitsunday region

"The focus of Operation Clean Seas was to have our community cleaning together and we certainly achieved this, with 395 members of the community being involved in 10 marine debris removal trips, two land-based clean-ups and various other individually organised activities during October," she said.

Ms Edge said the total amount of 5338 kilograms of marine debris translated to more than 56,000 pieces of rubbish that were no longer at risk of harming the Whitsundays aquatic environment.

"We are thrilled with the response that this initiative received from the community," she said.

"We definitely showed that many hands can make light work of the issue of marine debris."

Ms Edge said she hoped the operation had also inspired everyone in the community to take the time each and every day to remove any marine debris or land-based litter they might see while out and about enjoying the water and shorelines.

"If we all just removed one or two pieces of rubbish every time we left the house, then together we would all be making a huge difference," she said.

Operation Clean Seas was run as part of the Great Barrier Reef Clean-up.
