Local fishing competition successful

PETER Faust Dam attracted about 100 fishermen over the weekend for a catch-and-release competition.

Organised by the Peter Faust Dam Fishing Stocking Association - the event raised funds to help maintain the dam and its inhabitants

A total of 47 teams attended this year's competition with team Bas Mafia Outdoor consisting of Jon Millard and Ethan Farrell taking out the top prize.

Farrell, the champion angler of the tournament, and Millard finished narrowly ahead in a tight finish - holding off Team Power, consisting of Trent and Donovan Power by a narrow 200 points (less than a fish).

Overall 172 barramundi were caught over the weekend alongside four sooty grunter.

Fish Stocking Association vice-president Colin Slade said conditions were kind to anglers and the success of teams proved his point.

"We only had five teams who didn't catch anything," he said.

"The average size of each fish caught was impressive.

"We were really successful in the number of fish caught."

Ben Matthison caught the largest barramundi of the weekend at 122cm long.
