Local martial artists off to big tournament

KARATE: The Whitsunday Kyokushin members are off to compete at the 40th Annual AKKA Championships.

This weekend marks the Australian Kyokushin Karate Association's 40th Annual Full Contact Championships, where 33 members from Whitsunday Kyokushin Cannonvale, Proserpine and Hamilton Island are set to compete in the two-day tournament.

Instructors Shihan Wayne Hinschen, Sensei Belinda Woodham and Sempai Jacqui Elmsly, along with their competitors and club members, would like to thank the generous community for supporting them in their fundraising efforts in getting members to this event.

"All of our competitors are dedicated and have trained hard for this event. They are physically and emotionally ready to compete and are proud to represent the Whitsundays," Sensei Belinda Woodham said.

The event starts Saturday with more than 200 competitors competing in the non-contact divisions and continues Sunday with more than 300 competitors battling it out in kids padded contact and open full contact divisions.
