Local sculptor to feature at Swell

ONE of the Whitsundays' premier artists is set to display his latest creations at Currumbin's Swell Festival this weekend.

Sculptor Adriaan Vanderlugt is no stranger to participating at the annual exhibition on the Gold Coast.

He previously entered his Five White Shorebirds sculpture in 2009, which was subsequently acquired by the Gold Coast City Council and installed at Rainbow Bay, Coolangatta.

Since then, he has made entries every subsequent year.

Mr Vanderlugt's wife Denise said he'd been enjoying working with the copper pieces of his latest entry 'Hatchlings'.

"It was more work than he thought it was going to be but it was quite an interesting process," she said.

"A bit like origami."

Mr Vanderlugt is an accomplished artist, who received the Centenary Medal for distinguished service to the arts in 2003.

His contribution to Proserpine is also notable. He was involved in creating the Green Room at the Proserpine Hospital, and he sculpted the famous Rock Wallaby outside the Whitsunday Regional Council chambers on the Proserpine Main Street.

Mr Vanderlugt's once-regular column for the Whitsunday Coast Guardian received a Mackay Regional 'Arts-is-in Award' for recognition of media coverage.

The 10-day festival kicks off this Saturday and finishes on Sunday, September 21.
