Local swimmers excel at state championships
CANNONVALE Cannons coach Mark Erickson beamed with pride as a number of local swimmers knocked their personal bests out of the water at the recent Queensland state championships held in Brisbane.
All five Whitsunday swimmers attending the championships took to the water with determination and focus.
Young gun Angus Menzies took 1.25 seconds off his 100m breaststroke time and Natalie Milne improved her 100m backstroke by .65 seconds.
Emma 'Shredda' Hogan also knocked off .80 seconds in her age group 100m backstroke.
Ivan Van Zyl swam well to improve his 100m freestyle time by 1.72 seconds and finished 11th overall in 100m breaststroke and 15th overall in the 200m breaststroke.
Charlotte Mitchell received a silver medal for the 200m individual medley and a bronze medal in the 800m freestyle.
Mitchell's two relay swims also saw her claim podium finishes for the North Queensland regional team, receiving a gold for the medley and silver for the freestyle.
Erickson said it was an excellent result for all the hard work following the black line.
"The team had a lot of fun at Chandler and were all happy with their achievements," he said.
The Cannonvale Cannons 2014 training squad is back in action and members would like to invite kids, especially those doing learn to swim to participate.
Afternoon sessions during the holidays start at 3.30pm every afternoon except Wednesday.
