Local women secure rugby 7s win

RUGBY UNION: While women's rugby union got the job done on the big stage at the Olympics, a few local Whitsunday girls also claimed glory at the Hugheden 7s rugby union competition.

The BMW 7s team is made up of five local Whitsunday women, another four players from Bowen and a player from Burdekin.

In an amazing effort, the women took on sides from Townsville and surrounds, winning the final 22-0.

Even more remarkably, it meant they went unbeaten in the tournament.

The girls will now attempt to continue their success as they travel to Capella, Townsville and Noosa at the end of the month to compete in another three tournaments in an attempt to continue their success.

Team for the tournament: Lea Piccinelli (c), Shannon Piccinelli, Samantha Pawsey, Natisha Morsch Ivey, Jo Goodall, Shaniah Power, April Louise, Kaitlyn Harris, Pia Poid, and Bri Rosseta.
