Locals among the war fallen
LAST week was the 75th anniversary of the fall of Singapore.
During the battle to hold Singapore on February 15, 1942, George Fernando was reported missing and presumed dead.
George was born January 30, 1919 in Mungindi, south- west Queensland, and enlisted in Proserpine on June 14, 1940.
He was taken on strength with the 2/26th Battalion and disembarked in Singapore on January 24, 1942.
He is remembered on the Murgon and Proserpine cenotaphs, also the Singapore Memorial.
Twenty-eight Proserpine men were taken as prisoners of war and 14 died while in captivity.
